Personal Statement（个人陈述，简称 PS）和 Statement of Purpose（目的陈述，简称 SOP）是研究生申请中最重要的材料之一，也是很多留学生感到最棘手的部分——既要用英文写，又要展示自己最有说服力的一面。
本文从结构到细节系统讲解如何写出一篇有竞争力的 PS/SOP。
PS 和 SOP 的区别
很多同学混淆这两个词，实际上：

简单判断：如果学校要求你描述"why this program"和研究方向，更偏 SOP；如果要求描述"who you are"和动机，更偏 PS。实际操作中两者高度重合，框架类似。
第一部分：PS/SOP 结构框架
标准的 PS/SOP 通常 500–1000 字（约 1–2 页），结构如下：
段落 1：开头钩子（Hook） — 抓住注意力
段落 2：学术背景 — 你学了什么，做了什么
段落 3：核心经历 — 最有说服力的 1–2 个项目/研究/实习
段落 4：为什么这个项目/学校 — 具体、有针对性
段落 5：未来计划 — 毕业后想做什么
段落 6：结尾 — 简短有力地收尾
第二部分：逐段写作指导
2.1 开头：不要写"I have always been interested in..."
最差开头（招生官每天看几百篇）：
"Since I was a child, I have always been fascinated by economics. I believe that studying at your prestigious university will help me achieve my goals."
为什么差：空洞、无差异、没有具体信息。
好的开头类型：
方式 A：具体场景/瞬间：
"When our team's machine learning model failed to predict the 2019 bushfire patterns—despite weeks of data preprocessing—I realized that the real challenge wasn't the algorithm. It was the data quality. That frustration led me to focus my final-year thesis on robust data imputation methods."
方式 B：反直觉的问题：
"Why do rational consumers consistently make irrational decisions? This question, first posed to me in a first-year economics seminar, has guided every research project I've undertaken since."
方式 C：简洁的成就：
"In 2024, I co-authored a paper on adversarial robustness in NLP systems that was accepted at ACL—an experience that convinced me that research, not industry, is where I want to spend the next decade."
2.2 学术背景段
说明你读了什么专业、主修了什么，重点是相关性：
在 [大学] 攻读 [专业] 期间，我系统学习了 [课程1/课程2/课程3]，
其中 [具体课程] 让我意识到 [具体问题/兴趣]。
我的 WAM/GPA 为 [X]，在 [荣誉/奖项] 方面...
注意：不要列出所有课程——只提和申请专业最相关的 2–3 门。
2.3 核心经历段（最重要）
这是 PS/SOP 的核心，用 STAR 框架展开：
- Situation（背景）
- Task（任务）
- Action（你的行动）
- Result（结果/收获）
示例：
"During my third year, I joined Professor [Name]'s NLP lab as a research assistant (Situation). My task was to evaluate the sentiment analysis performance of BERT variants on Chinese social media data (Task). I independently collected and annotated a 50,000-tweet corpus, implemented three baseline models, and ran comparative experiments (Action). Our findings—showing a 12% accuracy improvement using domain-adapted pre-training—were incorporated into the lab's ongoing project on low-resource language processing (Result)."
2.4 "为什么这个项目"段
这段最能体现诚意，也最能区分申请人。
差的写法：
"I chose [University] because it is ranked #1 in the world and has a diverse student body."
好的写法（需要做研究）：
"Professor [Name]'s work on fairness in machine learning systems directly aligns with my research interests, particularly her 2023 paper on [Topic] in NeurIPS. The program's collaboration with [Industry Partner/Lab] also offers the applied research environment I'm seeking. Moreover, the coursework in [Specific Course] would allow me to address the gap in my training—specifically, formal methods for model verification."
建议：每个学校的 PS 要有 1–2 句专门为这所学校写的内容（教授名字、课程、实验室），绝对不能千篇一律。
2.5 未来计划段
简短说明你申请这个学位之后打算做什么：
- 研究型项目（PhD/Research）：说明研究方向和学术/工业目标
- 授课型项目（Coursework）：说明职业目标，学位如何帮助你实现
示例：
"After completing the MSc, I intend to pursue a career in climate risk analytics in the financial sector, where quantitative skills combined with environmental science knowledge are increasingly in demand. Alternatively, if my research experience during the program opens promising avenues, I am open to continuing in a PhD program focused on climate modelling uncertainty."
2.6 结尾
简洁有力，1–3 句：
"I am confident that [Program Name]'s rigorous curriculum and research opportunities will provide the ideal environment to develop both my technical skills and independent thinking. I look forward to contributing to the department's work on [specific area]."
第三部分：常见失分写法

第四部分：审稿 Checklist
提交前逐项检查：
- 开头是否吸引人，不是通用套话？
- 有没有具体的数字、项目名称、教授名字？
- 是否有针对这所学校的个性化内容？
- 每段是否聚焦于一个主题，没有跑题？
- 是否在字数限制内？
- 是否有语法错误？（建议用 Grammarly 检查）
- 请导师或信任的朋友审读了吗？
